Keeping it in good condition

Cleaning, sensible storage, and an occasional check of the fixings. That covers most of it.

Cleaning

• Follow the product-specific instructions first — they account for the exact finish and material used.
• Start with the gentlest approach that works: a dry cloth, then a barely damp one, then a mild cleaner only if needed.
• Test any cleaner on a hidden area and let it dry fully before going further.
• Avoid solvents, bleach, and abrasive pads unless the instructions specifically permit them.

Storage

Store somewhere dry, at a stable temperature, out of direct sunlight. Damp corrodes and warps, heat cycling loosens joints and adhesives, and UV fades finishes and weakens plastics. For anything with a battery, follow the manufacturer's storage charge guidance rather than leaving it flat for months.

Routine checks

Periodically check fixings, seams, seals, and moving parts. Catching a loose screw or a fraying edge early is usually a two-minute fix; leaving it's usually a replacement. For anything load-bearing or used around children, check more often than feels necessary.

What shortens the life of most products

• Use beyond the stated load, capacity, or duty cycle.
• Cleaning products harsher than the surface was designed for.
• Storage in unheated garages, lofts, and outbuildings that swing between damp and freezing.
